Clay and Lime. Why the theft and PK?

Postby jeois » Tue Mar 15, 2016 3:40 am

I've been walking all day looking for clay. It's nowhere to be found nearby. Okay, I can work to make a Clay Trough, but my "neighbor" already has one so I used his/her Milk of Lime. Now, I'm feeling guilty and want to replace the of Milk of Lime, but there's none to be found around either. I've walked several real world hours in each different direction looking for these resources, just to replace 2 measly clumps of clay worth of lime.

Here's my question, I don't mind not being able to find clay, but I don't understand why a so-called crafting game would reward stealing and such hardcore PvP? IMO, hardcore PvP make more sense in a different genre of games. So, I can spend another day searching for lime and/or clay, or I can just steal it from this other person, who doesn't have a claim to his/her stuff, in a matter of minutes. If someone did that to me, I'd be somewhat upset. I really don't get how this is conducive to "having fun." Like, why would I spent my time and money on a game where things go *poof* at any moment because the incentives are to steal everything that isn't nailed down (ie. claimed) ? And, anybody got any tips on where to find clay or lime?

Don't get me wrong, I've been enjoying the game so far, but this one bit makes no sense considering how long it takes to get stuff done, and it has the potential of ruining players' experiences. It also makes me hold off indefinitely from buying anything in the cashshop.

Yeah, people complain about this a lot... I like to settle somewhere nearish to a pit, but if you don't it's not a big deal... Just make an alternate character or two and find a pit somewhere else in the world, get that guy packrat, decent yellow bile, and decent mines and mountains, and have him do all the liming and trade with yourself in town. Highly recommended to put it on a separate account so you can both log in at once.

It actually severely punishes stealing and PVP due to the crime and scents system, but yes it's still a very central and foundational aspect of the game. Salem is almost entirely based around the tension between carebears who focus on building things and (sometimes) defending themselves, and raiders who focus on breaking into bases, looting, and sometimes murdering. If either side of that relationship were removed, the other side would be empty and meaningless. Yes, it's a high risk game, but no risk no fun :)

the incentives are to steal everything that isn't nailed down (ie. claimed)

It's really quite cheap to claim things, so yes, anything unclaimed is begging to be stolen and shame on them for leaving anything of value unclaimed (though milk of lime, believe it or not, is not anything of value) In fact, taking unclaimed things is generally not considered stealing, literally or proverbially. Leaving something unclaimed is like putting it in a big donation bin :P

For one thing this is NOT a crafting game. This game is marketed as a hardcore pvp game.

If you don't have clay and you don't want to get a alt to transfer then you can make it with a clay trough.

^^^+1

Also, you are told straight away after leaving the tutorial you can find a better place to settle than the one offered you. You are also told this game isn't for the self entitled.

I thought that they removed that from everything because it has been said that this isn't just a crafting mmo. I do however still see it on the fine print of the homepage. Maybe they looked over it.

Well I for one joined this game for the "Crafting MMO" bit, HOWEVER, in my eyes a crafting MMO includes hardcore PVP, raiding, and other elements as such. That's why it's a sandbox, and it would be boring any other way.

The website labels it just Salem. The trailer video on the other hand says "the crafting mmo". A relic from the past before MM took over?

Seriously, just settle somewhere with reasonable access to whichever seems more important (probably the lime, and more than you think because you can render pits relatively useless quicker than you think you will.)

Or you can do the alt thing, or actually pay unwashed, lowly Pilgrims silver to save you the trouble because you have a bunch from (INSERT PROFITABLE INDUSTRY HERE). There are several. Take your pick based on what doesn't make you want to put a gun in your mouth/is feasible for your chosen area of settlement. They will be glad of the silver, you will be glad of the limes.

(This is an example, and probably an extravagantly lazy one. Still, people pay for a lot of things in this game they don't feel like doing. You can pay for Lime harvesting, or do it yourself near your base, or with an Alt in the very corner of the Darkness guarded by legions of vicious Darkenbears, etc. Go nuts man.)
