Defense: Layered Fences and Splash Damage

Postby Chimm » Wed Mar 02, 2016 5:51 pm

I am a Newbie and I hear different opinions about this topic:

Can I build a layered defense with several walls build close to each other with no space between them, when (and this seems to be the important part) the outer fence is always of lower strength than the following wall.

Code: Select all
Like this:
Outside .... Split-rail Fence, Stone Hedge, Plank Fence ... Inside Claim with Torch Posts and Braizers

Or will Splash damage to Split-rail Fence damage the Stone Hedge or even also the Plank Fence?

How far is Splash Damage ranging? If there are 5 fences close to each other, will splash damage to the first fence also hurt the fifth fence?

Weaker walls will not make dmg to stronger walls.
Ex. stone wall will not do dmg to Plank
But Plank will do dmg to stone

Is this an exception? In my interpretation it means that Plank is "stronger" than Stone and the rule applies.

Ex. is not an "exception" , it's an "exemple" : plank is stronger than stone , and the rule applies :D

Edit :
- splash damage range : there's no maximum range (see here) , but usually people consider it safe to have 6 tiles between two walls.

In Pope guild its good showed hierarchy of wall xD

From stongest to worst
#1 Iron wall
#2 Brick wall
#3 Plank wall
#4 Stone wall
#5 Splitrail fence
#6 Makeshift fence

So your example, which you include in first post is good ^_^ Will not do any problematic splash

Hmm....JC said that trees may cause damage to walls someday. I'm curious how far the tree damage radius would be. Six units?

I'm not really planning tree walls but I'd like to know where I should and shouldn't plant.

I have seen damage at about 8 tiles out before. I would start with 10 personally. In the scope of things tho tree walls don't delay a person as long. Would probably be better off just putting another layer of stone hedge to delay someone a few seconds more instead of a tree wall. The time it takes a person to destroy 10% of a stone hedge is more than it takes them to drop a tree.
