I login after being afk for ages. All my clothing and items and silver are gone. Is there a new thievery mechanic that's responsible for this or should I be yelling at someone at the dev team for being down 9k silver?

Do you have a homestead still? It was probably due to this: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=17225#p250734 (just the first part, note that if you do not have a homestead and if you logged out [edit: "closed the client" is more accurate since your character will not actually log out without a homestead] without making one, the rest will happen, including permadeath)

Looks like someone smacked it down. Oh well, I guess I'll come back to this if another servers starts up.

If another server starts up then it will only be an expedition server which have a very limited lifespan of between a few months to maybe a year. They are also a lot more combat oriented and have new things added to make braking into bases easier (cannons)

Yep, this. If you don't want to lose your base and your things after being away for awhile (or even while not being away) then providence is strongly suggested. The server won't go away and if you properly defend yourself (or even modestly) it's unlikely your base and things will either.

Expedition servers are fast and loose, go there if you want to lose your things.

If the new expedition is actually 5x faster in character growth it will be worth it no matter what
