As a hermit should I invest in a town bell? Am I correct in thinking that if I don't someone can come and just take my PC?

Towns can use eminent domain to absorb a claim but the pclaim stone must be within reach of the town influence. Making your pclaim bigger than 51x51 protects you from that.

This is a little wrong. People may build on a pclaim at the cost of leaving a waste scent. So if they put a bell near your base but were not able to reach your pclaim they may chose to break into your base and build a boarder stone on your land leaving a waste scent. When the boarder of the town reaches your claim they may use a eminent domain.

However having a large pclaim does prevent this strategy to some extent. When using eminent domain the bell must be able to contain enough silver to make the purchase. So having a pclaim of 101x101 the person will have to build a lot of boarder stones before breaking into your claim and then use eminent domain.

There is no way to tell the cost right off as it would be offset by the person placing the silver in the bell. In theory if your claim is to cost 10,000 silver and someone has a high enough law & lore they could drop 5,000 silver and take the claim for much less as they receive bonus money to the bell.

Either way the larger your pclaim the more likely if someone is trying to eminent domain your pclaim you will log on to see them building tons of boarder stones all around you and realize what they are up to.

Eminent domain is possible but actually very rare. It isn't often that the perceived value of a Pclaim is large enough to justify the expense. The vast majority of eminent domains have been motivated by politics, one major faction wanting to harm another.

Since you are responding- what is the silver cost per sq to take over another's claim in this situation.

Yes townbell is worth it. If nothing else for the fact that you get a warning when people will raid you. (They have to build a trial by fire to be able to start punching down your walls).
