Key backups with an alt

Hi, a quickie this time.

If I give a set of keys to an alt for safe keeping and backup and he has them on a keyring while sleeping somewhere away from home. Can someone just come along and take them from his leanto?
I read on another thread it is a good idea to give an alt a set of master keys in case of an emergency or disaster. But if they are master keys, they can be copied. The thief could copy it and attune the new one to himself.

The thief can't attune them to himself. Only someone that has a key attuned to them can attune it to someone else. So, while they could be stolen, they can't be used by anyone else.

The Key system still sucks balls and some kind of NPC key holder for inheritting reasons should exist.

Or at least give us combination padlock/lock and once the correct code is entered you can open / close it as you please, even change the combination, so be weary of who you give it to.

Combination lock is too complicated, I think it should be something you pay for, that is, tied in with doing an estate. You can leave a key with the guy who plans it, and your heir can go get the key from him.

I mean, that's how it's worked as long as keys have existed and people have inherited property. You talk to the right people and they give you a key to the house or property you just inherited.

Besides less griefing on this part, there actually is no reason to make keyrings not-stealable and transfer automatically with inheritance.
Would make the game flow better and make death appear more natural.
Would make the game look a good bit more sophisticated and thought through.

But hey, there is still the griefing part, so this will never happen! ¦]

Nothing is not stealable in Salem. That's a core principle. If you're going for 'natural' it would make a lot more sense to not make keys attune and let just anyone who finds one use it.

If you think we haven't thought about this, consider that if someone betrays you, either on your claim or in your town, and you kill him, do you really want him to be able to inherit working keys to all your gates/houses/sheds, whatever he had access to? What if you have a lot of gates and don't have the time to immediately rekey them all? Sounds rather more inconvenient than having to keep a couple extra keys around. But feel free to make some suggestions in the Ideas section.

It is always these arguments, and I don't think they are good.
If you go like this, then I may wonder why not every bear killed in Salem provides 4 paws. :P

As it is now, it is a trip hazard for newbies, and a very minor griefing angle for raiders and the like, it provides more inconvenience than gain overall, that's why it would be good to fix it.

But nevermind, I know this won't be changed, so why would I try... :|

God I wish this was still in game. Made finding master keys so amazing.

I am far more likely to be ok with all keys working ALL the time regardless of who they are attuned to before I am ok with having something 'not lootable' simply to protect players who are too lazy or ignorant to handle the very simple solution of keeping a spare key with a friend or alt. I am VERY Protective of not tampering with the things that serve as a bar to eliminate those who lack a minimum threshold of gaming foresight and skill. Keys are one of those things. There is never a good reason to not have a back up key, and if you do not there is nobody to blame but yourself. At best a pop-up help screen when you make your first key might be in order to walk players through the simple solution here.

As you all know I'm fairly new to the game, although with the amount of questions I'm asking and reading I'm doing I do feel I'm pushing out of being a noob.
For me, I would love all keys to be usable by everyone. I think any noob that enters this game or any other mmo for that matter and doesn't ask or check a wiki to see how a key system works, should not be given sympathy if they mess up big time.
All I think that needs to be done for that system to take effect is to have the bank have 2 or 3 safety deposit inventory spaces with the option to rent more. Either for real money or in game silver.
I do however think these spaces should be limited to keys and store purchased items relating to inheritance. This would stop people hoarding good things and make raiding less attractive due to lack of good items in a base.
Its just how I'd like to have the game. I wouldn't bother putting it in the ideas thread because I would imagine a lot of people wouldn't like it. Its already kicking a debate up here.

Shame I cant just bury a basket somewhere with a spare set in.
