I look like an idiot walking around with a log on my back. Going slow and being unable to climb is secondary to this sort of embarassment.

lol, just 'right click' on teh ground to drop carried objects...or shift+right click to drop an object and center it on a tile.

Right click it on the ground, make sure theres enough space [if it's an old hollow log, you need to right click a bit further away].

to clarify: you cannot drop the item close to you if you would end up in its hitbox. If you click far enough, your character stops moving when reaching the hitbox, and then drops the thing.
