I mostly use hay, myrtle oak acorns, and fish skeletons in my freshwater traps and I get a couple per trap usually. Not sure what the best is.

I'm not sure it makes any difference.
I have 3 fish traps.
I only ever use autumn grass and I seem to get a more or less even spread of everything.

When you don't have more pressing concerns, try to make haystacks (http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Hay_Stack) and then turn your grass into hay. You will eventually get lucky and get a Needle (http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Needle), which is a high-value item.

I use meat shreds and common herbs, grass and pumpkin flesh, fish skels and stray chestnut.

Ok, in the name of science I'm conducting an experiment.
One trap set up with 14 meat shreds
Two traps filled with 14 autumn grass.

Results revealed soon!
