Ok so finally broke open a loot pinata and made a sound like a slot machine but then all the candy just poofed. Am I doing something wrong?

Candy doesn't last long on the floor. 5 second rule. :p

Indeed,
it is intended that when you break a pinata you try to do so with as many friends around as possible. That way its more of a town/group event to gather as much candy as you can before it despawns.
