how do u get so much madness?

i just ported to boston with 2 madness, tried to stock a player (no darwoth wasnt there lol) and out of nowhere im close to 7 madness?
i wasnt cursed or anything but did a cleans just to be sure, also only use self-crafted teddy bears, theres no bloodmoon or anything.... any explanation?
