Hi everyone, could you please give me some tips where to claim my land? I mean if I should better go deep to the wilderness (from my original leanto I mean) or what terrains are useful or so.. And also can I own more than one claim or is it possible to move it later to different position or not? As you can see I'm fairly new to this game :-).. Thank you..

Well, I'm a fairly new player, but I'll share my advice anyway:

You want to be very far from Providence. Very far. If you're not sure how far you are, make a http://salemwiki.info/index.php/New_World_Survey

If you think you'll want to do a lot of mining someday, settle near water so you can easily do sifting, and near lime pits (http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Lime_Pit) so you can smelt. Water is more important than lime if you can't find both, since once you have high Yellow Bile you can carry huge amounts of lime at once and store them at your base in stockbins. It's best to be near water and fairly close (within 10 mins) to lime pits, though.

Having water nearby is also very helpful for gardening. You'll also need water to make clay (http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Clay_Trough) if you don't have a clay pit nearby.

Having a clay pit nearby is nice but not necessary.

Living in or near a forest is helpful for early agriculture but not necessary.

If you live near a large Badlands biome (http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Badlands) you can occasionally find very valuable flowers (http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Those_R ... sh_Flowers) on the Thorn Bushes that are much more common there than any other biome. You'll want to stock up on antidote (http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Rattler_Serum) if you do, though, because Badlands are infested with snakes.

Basically: You want convenient access to water, ESPECIALLY if you plan on mining. Other stuff is a bonus. Again, though, I'm not a long-time veteran player or anything.

Wow, thanks a lot, so I'll do a bit of spot-finding wandering soon.. This game really seems to be very deep and interesting, I'm quite happy I came upon it..

Yeah, I feel the same way. I would have been playing much sooner but I just heard about it in June.

I would say that water is the most inconvenient if you're not near it. By near it, I mean right next to it. It has to do with sifting specifically because you can always use a well water for gardening and tubs and etc. Not being able to sift conveniently will leave you without an easy way to get glass panes, goldflakes, and gems. Mainly glass panes as they are basically necessary for most middle-game or end-game(whatever u want to say it is) products like Potions, Brick Townhouse, Cupboards, Fine Leather. Looking through the Tradewinds forum, you will find that most traders are looking to buy glass panes and the ones who are selling them are regularly out of stock.

Water or not water also has to do with your other question. You can have as many claims as you want. Only one can be your homestead at any time and, no, you can't move them once they are placed. You can only declaim them or extend their borders. So if you want easy, self-reliable access to glass, you can build on a water source now or choose to do so at a later date when you find you need glass. Most likely anything you built on your claim can be easily rebuilt on another claim when this time comes.

As far as biomes go, I have seen about 15% of the map, and my experience is that Confiferous and Swamp are the only two that I find few and far between. The others are abundantly everywhere. Every Swamp Ive come across is a fraction of the minimap in size, so I'm confident this is the same in all of Salem. I can't be sure if rare Coniferous is Salem-wide. Basically, biomes, come out come out whereever you are, was a main concern of mine when I was started as well, but I have found that it mattered none in the long run.

Flat land and water-side are the two things that I would consider to be most important location-wise. Digging is a pain in the ass. If you stick around for a long time, the possibilities with alt characters and multiple claimed lands in different locations will render any considerations you have now null and void.

Yes, glass and gold are instant sellers, which require sifting. I've never had someone not offer to buy all the glass I had on hand, and one order was 21 panes.

The marsh land is also a very nice place to be close to (bright green patches with lots of daisies) as it has a lot of early resources and food options. Later on it is a hot spot for beaver spawns so can really help when you have plenty of beaver pelts to sell. Don't forget you also have the main town of Providence at hand for many biome spawns. As with what others have said - water and lime are very important. Also look out for granite boulders, if there are non around then it might mean that the area has been used (and might still be being used)
