Okay maybe I am completely lost... But how the heck am I supposed to start getting iron to produce stuff when mining requires a pickaxe which I don't have access to yet?

First you can buy iron bars and nails from other players or from npc stalls at providence.

This is your introduction to trading test. You can get some rather expensive pickaxes from the NPC stalls in town, or you can make the effort to trade with a real person for cheaper and learn how that works. I suggest looking for a trusted trader in Tradewinds.

Actually it is common in real world as well. How do you open a package of scissors without scissors?

Also you can just steal a pickaxe or the iron/steel needed for one from another player.

One used to be able to mine with shovels, which was ok.
I see the intention behind it, but I still feel this was not necessary to remove it.

On the other hand, to balance it correctly, the phlegm drain of a steel shovel would need to be above a normal pickaxe, and a metal shovel and again a wooden shovel would need to be even higher, like 20 or 30 phlegm per tile at least. That would mean by the time a new player reaches enough humors to mine with a wooden shovel, he would be easily able to buy a pickaxe from an npc...

Then again, the thing that you need to mine a tile in one go is not right either, it should be in a way that you "damage" the tile you mine with every little bit of mining that you do, and then when it is "destroyed", the one who did the last "hit" receives the boulder over his head, would be a bit nicer and more newbie friendly that way, but I guess that alone is a reason to not make it that way.

This is a very bad hint!

Don't steal it!
Because you will become a criminal and kataklinger will maybe kill you.

Nah. Unless he steals it from me.
Anyway I posted that as an option. And I do advice you learn about the crime and punishment mechanics before doing any crime.
