I guess I seriously misunderstood how compost bins work... I thought the worm efficiency determined how often the compost bin produced a unit of humus and that if I had 0 worms the bin would never produce humus. But then I created a new bin and added some fill and left it there thinking I will add the worms later, and by next day the bin has a whole bunch of humus which surprised me.

So the sole purpose of adding worms is to increase the purity of the bin assuming you fed them purity food?

Yes it is only for making your humus pure.

You need not feed them pure food, either. The worms process everything in to humus of the corrosponding purity. Efficiency seems to be related to the output. If your average worm purity is 30%, but your efficiency is only 50%, your humus will be 15%. At least that's a guess based on accidentally noticing how things turn out. Also, when new 0% pure worms show up it will lower the humus purity.

And the pure humus is only important for gardening in pots, it has no effect on field purity in regular farming?

ok just adding my question here. I have tried to add berry wood shavings and cabbage cores to my compost bin but it won't let me add anything but worms .What am I doing wrong?

To add to the 'fuel' of a compost bin, hold the thing you want to add and right click, just like when fueling a fire.

Don't open up the bin just grab the item and click it onto the bin.

What about purity and efficiency over 100%? If I have 10 pythons with purity 20% that's efficiency 160 and I'm getting 20% purity humus. Now if a non-pure worm is spawned, what would be new purity of humus until I remove that worm? I'd expect something like 19.5 but somehow I feel that I get lower than that.
