I left the game for 8 hours this afternoon, I came back, and some of my ( non-claimed) fences are damaged.. could bears or some shizz do this or only players?

Animals cannot harm a fence, but if your structures aren't claimed, they will decay over time. That includes fences.

If your fences are unclaimed, they can be destroyed by other players freely and take decay damage. And no, animals cannot break fences from what I know of. So make sure you claim your land and you shouldn't face this problem.

It can happen immediately, it's somewhat random.
