What are the benefits to better types of gem cuts? Is it just the small affluence bonus?

If that is what it is I don't see the great purpose of the better cuts. :/

you can only slot 1 of each gem type in your clothing, also the best cut gives some nice afluence bonus the more carat it is.

Not only for Affluence.
If you need a feasting set per example it could help much to slot all 4 available cuttings.
Like you said, you can slot only one of each cut in every clothing.
