That can work, or you can just be tough enough to beat their faces into submission. I found that I naturally got there on the onward and upward progression towards bigger game.
A lot of it is really just timing and retaining your facing so you can keep your guard up.
That, or having the humors to instantly or quickly ***** them up and avoid any fuss with damage at all. You don't have to have very high humors.
Assembling even fairly bad hunting clothes also helps considerably.
But again, just keeping your timing and facing them properly and not getting flustered helps a lot. This is true of all animals, although you can get discomposed when encountering a new one, clearly. You want erratic and annoying, just try Beavers or March Hare. (Beavers that annoying spin, March Hares "Haha, I'mma run around like an ******* and nibble the ***** out of you foolish Pilgrim!).
