How do servers work in the game?

I see people refer to popham and providence as different servers does that mean if I spawn at providence and someone at popham I will not be able to find them? Are they really different servers or just different spawn points?

What's the difference between the 2 cities? And are there more cities than those 2?

Can I still find the darkness and all the content on both servers?

Easiest way to explain them is different realms like in WoW (pre-phase system) where if one player is on Popham, and you are on Providence, you will not be able to play together or message each other.

One of you would have to make a new character and select the server at the end of the tutorial to play together.

Providence is the permanent server.

Popham is an expedition server and temporary.
The Server was started in June and will be wiped soon (TM).
There will be more expedition server in future. I think you just start the game, then you better choose Providence.
Because Popham is more an PVP Server and there is a harsh mood.

wow that is very cool so the popham server is a bit more fast paced and hostile because people only have little time

How do you access the Popham server? I currently play on providence. Do I have to make a new account?

There are ways to inherit the stats of character(s) on Popham over to Providence, but you have to pray to statues many times over the course of weeks and you won't get it until Popham ends, so it's kind of a small condolence prize rather than something to count on. I'm playing on Popham to get a hang of the new mechanics that have been added since I last played figuring I can get in on the expedition fun and if I end up screwing up in my base design or character decisions then the world is ending anyways so it doesn't matter :P

Most developer-driven events seem to happen on Providence though, and very few people seem to play on Popham, so currently Popham is a little boring which may or may not make it more attractive depending on what you're looking for :P

Recently on Popham I've only seen a few claims here and there and only one other player, and it's very difficult to find other players to trade with. Great server for experimenting on, though.

You have to make a new character. If you want to be logged on to both characters at once then they have to be on separate accounts, if you don't care about that then it can be on the same account, just make sure to choose Popham at the end of the tutorial if that's where you want to go.
