Perhaps you have been merely eating the food normally. What you NEED to do, is what was instructed during the tutorial.

Click on the forks underneath the humour bar masks, then with the forks click on food that is predominantly phlegm rewarding. Just make 20 pest filled morels using virginia snails, 10 garlic spitroast made with timber rattler meat, and eat morels until you get debuffed down to 75-80ish at the lowest, then eat a spitroast or two in an attempt to get up to 90-95% efficiency again.
Exactly 6.022 x 10^23 worth of Lach molecules.

This.

The tutorial doesn't cover Gluttony very well, i dont think it explains the importance of it well enough, saying "Successful pilgrims can afford this luxury" like only rich players can do it, when its meant to be something you work on while your doing other stuff.

To put what Lach said simply: Eating the food will replenish your Humors, but you need to Glutton them in order to increase your Humors.

To add to what Lach said: Be careful of foods that have a high chance to decrease the foodgroup effectiveness, such as Frogetti or Garlic Rabbit, when you glutton them, it will have a 90% chance to decrease that foodgroup by 90%, destroying that foodgroup until you end that session, and will cause you to waste food.

Gluttony - What it is and how to do it.

Gluttony allows you to force the container for each humor to grow by overfilling it.
When you begin, the container for each is very small, 5.0 which is not enough to do much.

For your First Gluttony session, I advise using only a few things and only beginner-available foods like cooked nuts and fish and picked plants. Don't use (or eat) mushrooms until you know which ones are safe and boil the rest.
I suggest this because the time you must wait to gluttony again is based on what you ate in the last one, and using only a few simple foods will let you try several sessions in your first day - so you get a better understanding of how it works.

Fill your bag with the foods you will eat.
Click one of the forks on on the bar under your Humors at the top.
Click each food until they are all gone.
Right click anywhere to end the session.

While clicking the food you will see messages saying your humors have increased. This is a little misleading since the humor value has not changed but the Capacity for that humor has increased.
You will need to "eat" some food normally after the gluttony to heal the humors to full.

---
Now that you know HOW to Gluttony, you need to start finding which foods are better for it.

For one thing, most foods have a Decline % on them.
If you look at a blackberry, it gives 0 points in gluttony to each humor but black, in which it gives 5-6 points.
But, at the bottom it shows -50% Berries, 50% chance

This means that each time you 'eat' a blackberry in Gluttony, there is a 50% chance that all points you get for berries from that point on in the gluttony will be worth 50% less.
So blackberries are a very bad choice for gluttony, unless they are all you have left at the end of a session.

Some foods also have a recovery %.
Deviled Beaver made with Deer meat will give +5% to corn for example.
So eating it in gluttony will Raise the value of points from food in the Corn group by 5%.

Careful planning can let you get vastly more humor capacity from a session than you would by just picking random foods.

Note : All candy from pinatas give a +% to at least one food group.
