Debasement?

Would anyone be willing to elaborate on how Debasement works? Is it worth getting?

From another thread.

Blood wrote:You use a crucible and take 1 bar of silver and one bar of copper/iron and you smelt it into 500s and it leaves a scent where you do it.

The wikis don't mention a craft unlocked with the skill, but I would assume there's no other way to do it. It is a craft, and the scent stays for 5 months. This is all heresay however. I have not done this.

yeah: you can craft 250s from a single silver bar with a recipe from a precursor skill. As those coins are 100% silver, they are valid coins and making them does not leave a scent.
On the other hand, debasement gives you access to a new recipe where 1 silver + 1 iron bar get turned into 500s. As those coins are not pure silver, you have commited coin forgery which leaves a scent.
Both require a coin press.

Note: the coins gotten from the debasement recipe are real silver coins identical to those you use every day in every way.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

The time of the scent was posted in the patch notes for it, I thought. It does last longer than anything else, but don't recall the specific time without digging it up.

Just to be thorough, here's the post: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12311&p=177080&hilit=debasement#p177080

Forgery lasts 5 months. Players should not engage in forgery unless they are doing so in a location they plan on securing for an extended period of time.

I know making (legit) silver out of silver bars requires a lit crucible, I'd assume debasement asks for the same.

oh right this game doesn't have coin presses
There you go, I never actually bothered doing it myself because it honestly isn't worth it.
I'd rather use the little silver I get for silver crowns and the like, and debasement isn't worth the near-infinite scents for that little bit of extra silver, imho.

Well, if you'd buy silver bars and pig iron in bulk, it might be! :D

Or if you hit a big silver vein during first days of expedition :D

Or if you just don't think that it's that likely that somebody would visit where you counterfeited coins... Then, why would it matter if you counterfeited if nobody can find evidence that you did so?

First of all, 5 months is a loooooooooooooong time.
Second, I'd rather have a bunch of silver circlets rather than the money those silver bars would have given me.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.
