I think I'm dumb...

...because I can't grasp how to grow higher tier things. I've looked at a few of the threads posted here, (the flow chart and there is another one that has a big star diagram thingy), and I have some questions.
Specifically, I just looked through this thread, http://forum.salemthegame.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1603. Now, when I first planted cabbage a couple/three weeks ago, I wasn't really concerned about influence or the other "stats". I just wanted to grow some cabbage.
After I harvested the cabbage I figured I would try my hand at cotton. So I did. I've grown 2 harvests of cotton so far.
Now that I've increased my cooking I wanted to do some baking and I realized that I need flour. To get flour I need to grow, and grind, some "cereal". Now, I have 2 fields growing some "Seeds of Cereal" I bought from a player stall.
It is now that I'm realize there are different tiers and classifications of cotton, cereal, etc...

I guess my question is: now that I have cereal planted, what should I grow next?

Sometimes this game makes my brain hurt!

Might help to try one of the tutorials to get you started. It can be a little complex and depending on what you plan to do in the game can take months to get setup. GamerZakh has some good ones, but there are others you can use also.

Without knowing what you are trying to do it is hard to suggest what next, but in general many fields and a plan is best. Good luck and keep asking questions.

Yeah, at first I just wanted to grow some cabbage because I needed some for a cooking recipe. Then, I wanted cotton because of some clothes I wanted to make.
Now, I've progressed to cereals because I need flour for more cooking. I know I can go buy it in town or from players, but, if I can make my own and possibly sell some too then it's a double win.
I figured I had better get a better understanding on the tiers and progression so I'm not completely wasting my time.

Is there a separate system for potted plants? I have a number of those going as well. Is there a way to increase the yield from the standard 2 per pot?

Yes, gardening - which he also has a tutorial on. Best way to get more yield is Green Thumb. There is also a pay-2-win item called the garden shovel. Lastly your Herbs and Sprouts skill gives you a chance of an additional (the little +0 will be +1) as you get it higher - but that needs to be 100+ for it to start I believe.

Regarding getting Wheat flour, which t3 Cereal. The best method and also the quickest is the following:

1. Collect 400 pieces of grass and Build 10 Hay Stacks, Each piece of grass you put on the hay stack will turn into hay after 24hrs. Each Hay Stack can hold 40 grass
2. Plant Pumpkins and using the Hay you gained, fertilize the field with hay until it reaches 2000% influence. This will cause the 4th bar to be raised to 100.
3.Harvest Pumpkin and then plant cabbage, do the same thing, fertilize the field with hay until it reaches 2000% influence again, this will cause the 1st bar to be raised to 100.

*So to note, to get Tier 3 Cereal it requires you to have a combined total of 150+ when you add Bar 1 (Red) and Bar 4.*

4. Harvest Cabbage and then plant Cereal, once it grows you will have your first batch of Wheat Flour. Enjoy your Pies!

To maintain it, at anytime if either Bar 1 or Bar 4 drops to 75 you will need to do the crop rotation again, but do not worry you don't need as much hay.

if you need Bar 1 Plant Cabbage and raise influence to 500%, if you need bar 4 plant pumpkin and raise influence to 500%
