What is the difference between feral defence and general combat defence? Doesn't the later count towards defence against animals? Doesn't the former count towards defence against other player attacks??

feral defense shields you from animal attacks, you might need a lot if you want a hunter set. and common combat defense protects you from all kind of attacks, piercing, impact, etc..

it should include feral defense too, never tested it
