Jack/Jill of all Trades

I see lots of posts referencing different alts for different tasks - i.e. a mining alt, a farming alt, a hunting alt. etc...

Just wondering, is it even possible, for one character to become master (Jack/Jill) of all different skills or the only real way to progress in the game after a certain plateau, by having a variety of alts for the different skill groups (professions?)?

Just curious as to other people's thoughts or advice!

Thanks!

You don't NEED alts for different crafting professions, but a separate alt for crimes is a must.

yes you can learn everything on one char and have all your proficiencies up to 500+ if you want, there is nothing stopping you.
just use a fighter alt to defend yourself if you ever have to, which can be used to hunt as well.

Why? Because this is a perma death game and if you are attacked you want your main offline to avoid its death

It would seem to be a limitation of Inspiration. I could possibly raise 3 proficiencies up to level 300 (if 100% efficient I'd consume some 4.5 billion INS for each Prof, or 13.5 billion Inspiration). If I instead had 3 alts and focus each on a single proficiency I could raise a single Prof to over 460.

Several caveats here, though, since you'd also have to glutton 3 alts up to a reasonable level to study everything at any appreciable rate and you'd have to have an abundance of resources to consume as far as items to study go. And it's not reasonable to plan to study Hammer & Nails only without spending some time on the other Profs to get the basic foundational skills acquired. The above math is over-simplified to more clearly make the point.

It all depends on your bottle-neck. If you're always short on inspiration, then you can try making potions to restore it and smoking hookah at the Den. Another solution to this problem is multiple alts. However, if you're short items to study, then alts will not solve your problem.

And other concerns such as likelihood of having a character killed. It would hurt less to have 1 of 3 avatars murdered than to have your ONLY avatar murdered. So consider your play style and risks like this as well.

Thanks, this is helpful - though still interested in hearing more thoughts if anyone else wants to chime in too. Sounds to me like I might be best suited to have at the very least, 2 more alts - as the majority of things I'm interested in seem to fall into 3 main categories - hunting/tanning, mining/smithing and farming/cooking. Probably the same for most ppl in the game. And then possibly a throw-away alt for combative and backup situations. Got it...

Just would be interesting to see one character maxed on everything - but as you point out Zapt13, that's a pretty unlikely goal to strive for in terms of time and my likely interest in the game lasting that long - lol! (I mean I do love it, but based on the cursory numbers you gave and the amount of hours I can play typically, probably take me a good 2-3 years to max a single character capable of accomplishing all that - rofl!)

From my exerience is good to have jack/jill. Eventualy he will ussuly be offline acumulating inspiration while u play with alts so its easier to raise hes skills in longer run. Mostlikely you will use him primary to maintain base and provide high end stuff for alts till tey raise enough to do basic stuff. Since purity is based on on items u use its same on which character u use them.

By my math, yes. 100 to reach level 2, 200 more to reach level 3 (300 total), 300 more to reach level 4 (600 total). Ever hear the riddle about earning a penny the first day, 2 pennies the second day, 4 pennies the 3rd day, 8 pennies the 4th, etc? Do it for a month and you'll be a happy camper. (2^30 > 1,000,000,000).

I did neglect the fact that we now earn 2 levels for each primary proficiency gain, but considering the difficulty of studying 100% efficiently I figured it was near enough a wash to leave it out.

This is not how it works

It's a parabolic progression. What you want is 100*n*(n+1)/2. To get each up to 300 would cost 67,775,000 times your level of innefficiency.
