How can you be stolen from while asleep?

Not sure how, but at some point today, I was robbed.
I had a snakeskin purse on me that I had about 300 silver in. I ported to Providence to sell some stuff and I noticed that my cash went into my inventory instead of into my purse.
I checked my toon and sure enough, my purse was gone! :(

How does that happen? I make it a point to only logout in my own bed on my homestead. Now, I don't have a house, (can't afford one yet), nor do I have any fences yet. How is it that I can be robbed while logged out?

Or, is it possible to be pick pocketed while walking around town?

Everything you have can be stolen when you sleep. Anyone with larceny skill can steal from your leanto/claimstone(homestead). They leave scents with evidence behind.

What if you log out someplace other than your homestead?
As far as I can tell nothing else was taken, just my cash.

No matter where your character is when he logs out, people have to go to your leanto/homestead to steal from you.

So even if I logout some distance away from my homestead someone can still take things off my person? (i.e. from my backpack, purse, or inventory)

If someone gains access to your leanto/claimstone while you are offline, you can be looted

All they have to do is right click you leanto and select Lewt

Your gear sheet will pop up and they then can choose to take what ever they want from your leanto/claimstone and will leave scents doing so

How far away you are from your leanto does not matter.

While looting a leanto, you can take anything that character wears or has on its inventory, including looking into the backpack/toolbelts. Keys are useless though as you can't use them unless you're attuned by the owner.

Though my solution to that would be wallbashing the crap out of the locked sections of the base. ;)
