So I was building a wall, how do I tell what direction is east , west etc?

is there a compass?

also I take it I can't move my wall, is there an easy way to knock it down?

Move your character and see which way the minimap moves. You can find North that way. There is no compass.

The easiest way to knock it down is to put a Pclaim over it and bash it with the owner of the claim. You get no soak that way and can destroy things more easily, including walls. I'd advise to do it quickly though, if this is a new wall; once splash kicks in, it gets messier.

Probably don't want to build walls until you do. They won't do you any good without a claim under them and anything you build will take decay ticks if unclaimed. Decay ticks are bad on walls because they take a lot to repair.

Thanks for the info, so if I don't have a claim, how long will structures last? a few weeks, months, or years?

It's kinda random. Decay ticks hit random squares in a tile while the tile is loaded so it depends how often someone is there keeping the tile loaded, how big the structure is to cover more or fewer squares, and how much HP the structure has to begin with. Generally, little things like drying racks and whittler's benches will last a few days or a week or so. Houses and smelters can last a couple months. Walls will last quite a long time, but they cost so much to repair that any damage to them at all is a big pain.

You're perfectly fine to live without a claim for a little while if you are just getting started and you only build newbie things like whittler bench, baskets, and carpenter bench. If they start to turn red, repair them. Or use the 'repair' function on them now and then and see if anything happens. Just don't try to build anything serious like walls or permanent structures.
