Fenced myself out of camp

I assumed there would be some sort of entrance option upon completing the fence, but I guess not. All I have is an axe and can't seem to destroy a piece of fence to create an opening. Am I screwed?

What skill does that require? Settling? If so, I'm not quite there yet.

The fence would come down easier if you owned the land underneath it. Settling is probably not too far out of reach so it is probably a good idea to strive for that and drop a claim under the fence.

If your leanto is inside you can always drop your inventory on the floor and teleport inside.
Bases with no gates for the win, true vaults.

If you build a fence with a gate, can only you open/close that gate, or can anyone walking by open the gate?

They'd have to trespass, but I believe they can just open it if its not locked.
