Please re-attempt the addition of the screenshot. I presume the "prowling" cat was a cougar. Usually when they enter your render distance they will do a roar, and I would advise anyone not already familiar with the game's mechanics to play with sounds on and pay attention. The game is fun in that most bad things will announce themselves in one way or another, and it'll make your life easier to be able to hear them and recognize them after the first bad happening. Steer clear of cougars until you can defeat them, and go the long way around as they aggro from quite far away.

Yeah, they have a distinctive growl, it's quite the cue.
It can save your ass if the radar is cluttered or you are distracted.
Do note that they appear in most if not all forests, and mountains. So travelling in the mountains to avoid trouble, is contingent on avoiding cougars. You can kind of do that because it's never very far to a ledge, but you have to be able to climb the ledge, get their faster than the cougar eats you, and not fall and KO anyway and probably lose your stuff by being next to a cliff if you do.
Although, there are rare flowers and snowballs, so it's your decision if you want to brave the cougar country.
Also lots of rocks and thornbushes up there.

I think he says "ghost" because it appears in a somewhat shadowy form. I have experienced this as well. Is this how they always appear? Is it because we are newer players and haven't unlocked big game hunting or something like this? That doesn't make sense to me, because I have seen bears, and they appear in solid form just like a rabbit or a deer does.

The cougar always appears shadowy until it agros. You can't get a skill to change that, so older players are in the same boat you are. They appear shadowy, while bears and others do not, because they are so very stealthy and camouflaged. I have personally been KOed by them twice when I wasn't paying attention, but otherwise the coughing and growling noises they make will warn you well before aggro range. I suggest playing with sound when out of your base.
