First off, to get the declaration set as JC stated it:
- instanity is the invisible "bar" that fills up by being logged in, doing mad things, licking mold,...
- a madness level is the actual effect that is gained when the insanity "bar" is full


Now, beds used to reduce insanity by sleeping in them, and they used to reduce madness if sleeping with a teddy in them.

Now, Marp spread some quite misleading (?) information about beds no more reducing insanity.

I asked JC and he said they still do.

I just logged in a character that I have not used in at least a week, all the time that character was logged out properly sleeping in a leafy bed.
After 30 seconds, that's right, 30 seconds of being logged in (really, no exaggeration here in the slightest!), I got a popup "you just gained a madness level"....WTF?!?


So, beds don't reduce insanity anymore?

This could have been announced, and should have been announced, seriously.



...or in case I missed something and they still do, and maybe "if you sleep for a week in a bed you get a madness level" was added... just tell me!

I would also like to know.. When Insanity was introduced Beds where supposed to reduce Insanity slowly, Sleeping with a Teddybear removed a madness level.

Couple weeks later, people keep saying Beds don't remove insanity anymore, without pointing to where they got that info.

Need some straight answers, because im starting to get annoyed with some of the misinformation being spread about the Insanity mechanic..

I said that beds no longer reduce insanity after they started reducing Madness (when used with a teddy bear). I heard that from John, or I think I did. But it turns out that I was either mistaken, or he changed his mind because he is now saying that beds do both. So, it seems that sleeping in a bed with a teddy bear will reduce both your madness levels and your insanity.

I realize we can't really know that, but you know what kinds of tasks you were doing and how you were managing your insanity before you logged out. Maybe it was over and the server just hadn't processed it yet when you had previously logged out to display to the client, and it took logging in on that character for it to show up? When you first log in a character that is loading assets, it can take a minute or two for everything to load and for you to see various statuses. I really don't know if insanity and madness is processed asynchronously in a batch only every so minutes or if it's processed as soon as task X applies points to it, so the latter question may or may not be possible.

In case people wonder what I mean by asynchronously--hope I'm using right term here--is that the character data stores up the current insanity level, but the server only parses the character list and insanity levels every 30 minutes or so and adds any gains or losses to the last known value and then assigns madness based on the new total. If you were to log out before the batch is ran, then your acct/toon won't be online to have the point assigned to it, but it would show up when all data is loaded the next time you log in. If this begs the question of "why do it this way," there are reasons these sorts of things are done on servers. One they can be assigned as a low priority task so if other data has greater need for processing, say combat, it can be handled without waiting on things that aren't high priority, like claim upkeep or assigning a new madness level. Two, it further obfuscates exactly how madness works and makes it harder to guess any point values that a particular activity may have. (I'd also add in some various random factors, too, to further frustrate the efforts that could be averaged out in a bell curve.) I'm sure that those with better knowledge of server and mass data processing can give a more in depth answer.

So beds reduce insanity only when sleeping with a teddy?

3 things reduce madness levels: teddybear, hookah and tobacco. Other things reduce insanity.

That's an interesting point, 30 minutes though seems to be a pretty long delay in between processing...

What I can tell is, that I use the character for tasks that did not involve anything that could have affected insanity at all, so only the passive gain for being logged in.
Second, iirc I had him logged in like a week ago for about 10 minutes without doing anything, he had no madness level back then and was always sleeping in a bed.

The way you described it, the character should have been told of his madness level already the last time it was logged in,
I doubt being logged in for 10 minutes after sleeping for a week will add a madness level.
Honestly though I am not 100% sure here.



I have heard though, from a several people, that they went to sleep with madness 1, slept with a teddy for much longer than needed, like 12h or so, woke up with madness 0 as expected, but jumped to madness 1 again within ~15 minutes without doing anything that could have added insanity.

The Problem on Madness decrease is, that you decrease it but your Insanity Level is always high then.
You can see it in this way:

Lets assume that the Insanity-Bar has a worth of 100 points.
Every Madness Level has his own Insanity-Bar.
If you gain Madness 1, then the Insanity-Bar from 0 to 1 is on 100.
Lets assume, that you get 0.5 to the Insanity Bar every 10 Minutes doing nothing.
Then the next Bar for Madness 1 to 2 will gain 1 point after 20 minutes beinig online without doing nothing.
You see always Madness Level 0, because the batch is not running yet and you have get Madness 1 between 2 batches.
Now you go to bed without a teddy.
You wake up 12 Hours later.
Only the Bar with this 1 point of Insanity-Bar for Madness 1-2 is going down, not the Madness itself.

Other situation:
You gain Madness 1 and you are online for another 1 hour without doing things, that lowers insanity.
So like wrote before, you have a insanity Bar with maybe 2.5 points.
Now you go to bed with a teddy.
You wake up after 12 hours.
Your Madness is 0 again... but if you lower your Madness then the next lower Insanity Bar starts again on maybe 90 points.
You have sleep more than 8 hours, maybe your Insanity-Bar for Madness 0-1 will be decrease to maybe 80 points if we let assume that you descrease insanity on 0.5 points every 10 Minutes of sleeping.
This mean that you have like 4 hours to do nothing (if we calculate with the assumed value) before you gain madness 1 again.

Okay... we dont know the right values.
But we know that sometimes madness gain again a short time after we have lower them.
So i think my assumed value is much too high.
The real Value is maybe really low for sleeping, so that it could happend that you wake up with a Insanity-Bar 98 of 100 points, so that you gain Madness after 15 Minutes beining online and doing nothing.

It means, you have to do things that lowers your Insanity-Bar after you lower your madness!
