Buying stolen items; effects?

Postby Amnezia88 » Wed Jul 22, 2015 3:13 am

Greetings Pilgrims,

I've gotten some offers to buy certain items...these items are stolen though, yet juicy ;)
Having read a bit about the 'crime & punishment' section on the wiki,

The thief can be tracked by the victim so that the victim may seek revenge and get his stuff back.
The stuff/items are also trackable ( or so it says on the wiki ) and if one would buy a stolen item...stuff could happen...

What does this mean?
If i buy stolen items, the rightfull owner is also able to track me(the buyer) down and touch me in a bad way
The rightfull owner tracks me down and reclaims the item?
..Nothing? :)

I was wondering if it's 'worth the risk' to buy such 'hot' items and if the risk is just losing the item or that perhaps i will have to pay with my life..

Thanks for your advice in advance.

means that someoen can track the item down and see that you have it.

The victim who tracks down his property in such a way has no particular way to act on this as they might against the thief. The evidence is for the thief, not the item. They can track the item, but are obliged to ask for it's return nicely, and if they wish to take it against your will are then obliged to commit a number of crimes, either assault and battery and larceny (if it's on you, and they can attack you) or trespassing and larceny, and probably waste if it's in your homestead.

If it's in a town they will have an even harder time.

In many cases it might not even be worth it to them, although some players here would not care about that, seeing as how they use the profits they make on everything FOR the purpose of fighting and ensuring others cannot have Nice Things. You probably have some idea of who you should respect by this point if you definitely know it to be this or that person, but be aware there are other, dark horses that can still mess you up over a stupid 500 silver item or something out of spite or lulz.

And it would be a course of action that put them at risk. Most players wouldn't even bother because it's not "worth it" money wise, and they could die, by leaving all those scents.

They would probably settle for getting the original criminal one way or the other, and not picking a fight with some other guy where they are the criminal over something that's not worth it anyway.

Well thanks for the info guys.

The other reason that i was a bit confused about this game mechanic is because a few days ago this happened ;

A thief had sold me some items.
The next day when i logged in a few of these items..well..they just weren't there anymore..
It was a wallet, some clothes and a teddybear. The wallet and bear disappeared but the clothes are still in my possesion and the silver i took out of that wallet is also still in my possesion..

I geuss i'll have to venture out to the Bug section of the forum.

thanks again fellas

Please don't do this without checking for scents.

Hmm..
I had these items on my person and i logged out in the wondrous capital of Providence.
I'm thinking you think i put those items in a box on my claim and someone took them(disappeared), is that correct?

I had no debuffs and was able to log out. All items in my inventory and the next day some were gone.

Your inventory is not safe when you log out.

This mystery is getting deeper and deeper..

I've seen other chars log out and 'vanish' into thin air..thinking you would be safe if you haven't done anything wrong ( cant be summoned ).
But then again i might have to reread some manuals and the wiki on that matter. I always trail & error myself but with this case i'm a bit lost.

It's also weird that the person who then might have took ( no scents seen ) those items, left all the other more valuable stuff on me.

I'll keep my eye on it and if stuff keeps disappearing without any scents or other indications that i've been mugged, i'll go the bug section.

Thank you for your time and quick responses Dallane

You are right that your character vanishes on logging out. But it's through your leanto a thief gains access to your inventory while you are logged off, not through your character. You will have to get back to your homestead and check for scents there.
