Salem

I was mining on the first level and I found a Cave Down. I entered it and there appear to be about 8-12 bats on the 2nd level. I managed to flee before any attached to me (I know about the unequipping thing). Will these bats ever despawn? I'm a fairly weak character with (iirc) 24 blood, 23 YB, 18 P, and 30ish BB. How powerful would a character need to be to take on all these bats, assuming they never despawn?

yes after a while they despawn, usually you would want to empty your inventory before trying a cave down, that way if you are koed you don't have to get anything back and just wait the bats to despawn
