It has never been stated that working decreases your insanity, you will have to keep up studying on regular base in order to prevent your madness from going up. Working does not help and counts as hard or even harder than AFK'ing.

Now Heffernan is complaining about Insanity? Wow..

Mindless tasks don't reduce insanity, Tasks that are considered 'Relaxing' do.

None of these things you listed decreases insanity.

but whittling etc is also hard work and DECREASES insanity

i wouldnt call it mindless work to build walls

on the other hand insanity is perfectly for ppl who play 1h a day and can sleep with a teddy or learn alot of things, but i alread learned most of the skills (does gluttoning count? anyway i got a 11d F&F so irrelevant) and play up to 15h a day i guess this system wasnt designed for ppl who play 15h a day?

I play on average 10-12 hours a day, and as ive said in multiple other threads, ive only gained 2 madness levels in the time the Popham server has been up, and when i did gain them, i took care of it immediately, Whittling, studying, etc to get the Insanity down, then puff the Hooka to remove the madness level.

Building a wall, your running around gathering materials, then your damn near breaking your back to build it, wouldn't exactly call that relaxing.
Mining.. you have to be a bit crazy to do that for any length of time, your in a dark cave smashing a wall expecting to get something from it..
Breaking stones.. Didnt they have that in prisons to let prisoners blow off steam while also getting gravel to pave roads with? Among other reasons, it was a mindless task that caused mental degradation or some ****, so they stopped it.

Now.. Whittling.. Aaah that's relaxing. Take a knife and just whittle away, crafting whatever you want from a piece of wood, or simply take a seat next to a lake and whittle until there is no more wood, thinking about life and all its glories.

Anyways, you get the point. Hard work is neutral, your still gaining passive insanity, but hard work neither raises or lowers it. Taking a break to study is just as important as taking a break to rest from Work IRL.

Sure it was. Every few hours, use your accumulated inspiration to increase a proficiency or two. Just because you learned all the skills doesn't mean it won't benefit you to have a little more Hammer and Nail or Herbs and Sprouts or whatever. Speaking of Hammer and Nail, whittling is a nice relaxing task to reduce your insanity. I hear some people favor the Lumberjack Frickadel for when they are working hard for long hours and need regen food due to it's use of a whittled sharpened stick and a fire to cook it. BTW, if you play as much as all that, you obviously will be doing a lot of gluttony. Space your cooking sessions out a bit, both rolling dough and cooking over a fire reduce your insanity. Also, you need food to cook, right? Planting things in pots is soothing and will also help. The system is only harsh for people who spend long hours doing the same things over and over again and those who stand around doing nothing at all all day. Do a variety of normal base maintaining tasks and character building tasks, and you'll be fine.

I'm starting to think you're deliberately ignoring how madness and insanity work. The list of things that help you or hurt you isn't all that long, and there have been many people willing to explain how to work with the system so that you will hardly notice it is there. This constant ***** won't change anything for the 'better'. Some people here have made fairly reasonable arguments that some more balancing is needed. I, at least, think perhaps some of the harsher PE should be reserved for higher madness levels, though whether John will agree is entirely in the air. Of course, I also believe sleeping in a bed should keep you in the world to compensate. You, however, you make me want to just double the insanity increase rate on you for awhile (sadly not possible though).

but relaxing doesnt work with that, since its relaxing for me to just sit around in town and trade with others and also gain madness/insanity that way.

Not everyones method of relaxation can be added to the game.. just use the methods that where given in the Insanity announcement..

As pathetic as it sounds, use an inspiration every 10-15 mins and make sure to vary them a bit and level up something when you can and you will be fine.

I personally agree that you should not be punished for actively playing the game but it is what it is.
