Sounds silly but I am new and have only one bat in my mine so far. I zone in it latches onto my neck and I ctrl click if off but have to climb out to regain blood. What is the best way to target and kill a single bat before it drains blood?

Use Roundhouse.

Use latiki's client which you can set to automatically remove them.

Ignore it.

Or Roundhouse kick it.

I prefer roundhouse kick, too. Compared with the auto-drop, i usually can roundhouse kick them even if they aggro me and attach themselves to my neck.
setting roundhouse to a control-modded hotkey may also help if you don't use the auto-drop: control-click spam your neck slot and also easily spam control-F2 or w/e for roundhouse.

I prefer to just punch bats. I had this unfortunate experience right after bats were added, that with multiple bats roundhouse kick only aggroed all those bats and before the attack landed those bats somehow stunned me. Tried to execute the attack again and again was stunned. Then I KOed. So now I prefer to take them 1 by 1.

I am using Ender's client but did not realize you can set it to auto remove them? How?

Go to options under the "Cheats" tab.
