They can loot you but can't kill you, don't worry.
Unless you have scent, which you leave after doing criminal acts.

These crimes don't leave summonable scents
you can't be killed offline if you do these.

Scents are the ground objects used to track a criminal, the evidence that can be used to summon is not left by all crimes. Assault and battery do not leave scents from what I know. Neither does tresspassing. Larceny, murder, revenge, witchcraft, waste, and possibly vandalism do, but not sure about vandalism. People can collect said scents and if they have line of sight to your homestead, they can then summon you when your character is offline and do naughty things to you. If you don't have a homestead set they can summon you at their own homestead, which simply results in your instant death. As far as protecting your inventory, you are meant to be defending your homestead with a pclaim at least and walls, defenses (torchposts + braziers) and ultimately either be immune to being bought out or having / joining a town.

Vandalism is a more serious crime than larceny, so yea it leaves evidence.

great stuff guys thank you.... now for torch posts and braizers is it best to clump them all over or have them jst out of range of each other so each does full dmg? i heard they do less damage if they are in the same area as each other
