As a newb what items to sell to make silver?

A few days ago I did my first port back to Providence. I hit up an NPC vendor and sold some misc junk I had been carrying around. I've since gone back but now it seems that I am unable to sell anything to the vendors.
Do they only buy certain things?
I just unlocked settling and I'm trying to scrape up the cash for my claim.

Do stump hoarding to find timber rattler skins and sell it for a small amount of 4s, indian feather and arrow to craft into a necklace to sell for 35s.
If you're strong and capable, do cricket hunting and gather up enough to craft it into a team and sell it for some good amount of silver.

How do you catch crickets? I've killed plenty but can't figure out how to catch them alive. I do have a net and catch butterflies.

You can't catch crickets, you just kill them.
Kill 11 and craft a cricket team and you can sell that for 22s.
