Flattening land

Are there any guides on making a decent size piece of land flat? I am using Ender's client with the grid, but so far after 2 days of digging all i have is a big stain on the map that still is not level. I am trying to flatten it to put a claim stone and walls. Any suggestions on the best way to go about it? Should I flatten the center and work out or start on the low side?

You can start flatten anywhere. It depends on what suits you best.

You terraform, or more rather how I terraform, by holding down ctrl and press dig on a tile, the tile will be flattened to the same level/height of the tiles around it. That's what I do, and it always works. The grid helps to measure it. Preferably you should start flattening from the center, so you know how much you want to flatten around your place.
