to find a abandon mine shaft? or can u find them right off the bat?

No you don't need any skill, they'll appear whatever are your prof and skills.

damn was wondering cause I been walking around for over a hour now and not seen a single one. trying to place my claim but I want a abandon mine in it.

Well if it needs to be abandonned... Depends where you're wandering too; in popham you have very very low chances to find one as the server is too fresh; in providence the map is very big so you'll have to wander more to find one

I am on provi, don't want to go to popham cause it resets why work hard to lose everything in a reset

Yeah it's for more experienced players that need the expedition additions.
Well on providence, walk far from the main town or you'll have troubles anyway, more than 12 hours if you can (counting the fact that you'll probably stop a lot to cook and study stuff). You'll certainly find some abandonned mines on the way and the furthest it'll be from main town, the better it'll be.

You need to make a woo woo wand or dowsing rod, and eqiup it and select prospecting. You need the prospecting skill i think, itsbeen awhile. When you do this you will see the mines nodes show up and you build an entrance. Everyoney that responded not helpfully where focused on your use of "abandoned", meaning someone built thw wntrance and left. Making a base with a mine node and close water /well is a good idea. Even if you dont build the mine for a while.
