if you are new player then you should start on Providence. Providence is more peacefu, so it will be easier to learn

Popham will be destroyed by the players themselves after a few months. We expect about 4-6 months but this is the first one, so it's something of an experiment. Reasons to play are that you can acquire domestic animals to ship home to Providence and the possibility of being the player who destroys the server and gets the bragging rights.

However, Popham is very small and thus there is a lot more conflict from the crowding. Popham has canons and other things meant to increase the danger of the server, and overall it's just meant to be a more strife ridden server. You'll probably die a few times if you try to start a character there, which is fine if you don't mind that.

Providence is definitely more peaceful and open if you just want to learn the game and try the expedition later. We'll be doing another shortly after this one ends if you don't get there in time.
