Does anyone know how to get rid of The Precious once you find it mining?

i believe you can scroll it in or out of storage, you just can't pick it up.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

He meant that you can place it in a container. If you want to get rid of it entirely you can put it in a container that you then destroy.
