So, im a complete nab that likes to plan. Please bear with me.
Im planning on building a hermitage for myself, but i need to know, how do braziers work? I understand they do damage to people breaking in but how often must they be fueled? How far do they need to be spaced? Can i ahve as many as my heart desires? Second question.
Say i have three walls with no gaps inbetween and a gate in each wall. Will the gates open or do they need room to open into? If so how many tiles do i have to space my walls?

Last but not least, do you pros have any tips that could help me and my settlement progress?

They need to be at least one square away from each other, more braziers is always better. They take coal as fuel and unless people attack you fuel stay forever. They can be put out by water bucket so if you can fence them in.
The gates will open.

Plan your base before you build it so you can make sure all your walls/gates line up. I've found it helpful to pave where I want my walls to go and to make sure the ground is flat enough. The strongest wall always goes on the inside, weakest the farthest out. Because of splash having 3 walls of the same type with no space in between isn't the best idea.

If you are making a long term base and don't have the resources for a brick wall, leave space for them.

Start grinding purity trees to increase the purity of your braziers, you put unscathed wood into them to raise their purity and thus do more critical hits. Also don't forget about torches, they can also be a lot of help in protecting a base because they cannot be stoved the way braziers can.

This question can be answered when you test your defenses with an alt. Basically Braziers only fire when someone commits a crime in their range, NOT AFTER THAT

Which means that a brazier in the middle of your base won't work, it will just be put out. You need your braziers and torchposts to be defending your outer walls and not leave any space unprotected because that small space where it has no influence range? That's where raiders will break in. Also a wall is worthless without braziers torchposts defending it, it's a matter of time but it will go down if you don't have them.

So basically what im gonna do i think is make a stonehedge wall, then when i get enough mats ill build a brick wall a couple tiles behind that. So braziers will only fire once? Or once per crime commited? How many walls should i put up in the end? The torchposts, will they reduce brazier dmg if they are in brazier range? Thanks!

they have different damage calculations now, you need both brazier and torchposts to have an effective defense. They start firing the criminal when he commits a crime under their influence. a full brazier will last a lot of time

If you traspass and there is a brazier/torchpost covering the area where the person traspassed then it will start shooting him BUT Defenses which were not covering the area where the person traspassed and left a scent won't shoot until the criminal commits another crime under their influence.

Actually, Torchposts will fire on trespass, braziers need other types of crimes to activate.
