I'm on my laptop- and I don't know how to 'right' click on the little pilgrim I want. And I can't move the character- but I found this little brown fuzz on the box in the town, and whenever I randomly move that ball they move too- but it's all glitchy and now I'm basically running it into a wall.

You move by left clicking on the ground or using WASD on your keyboard. Do those not work for you?

RIGHT.

WASD do work for me- but so far clicking doesn't do anything for me. I'm stuck with the message saying to talk to the people to choose my gender, though when I click on one it doesn't do anything. I'm stuck with a grey dude. ;u

start with the guy in the hat right beside you, click directly on him, and make sure there is nothing between you, it will walk you over to him and turn you into a regular human color pilgrim. Then you can do the same with the rest of the people there

Right click. You have some way to right click on things outside of salem right? Try that.

Do you have a separate mouse your are you using the mouse pad?

And like I said, clicking doesn't seem to be doing anything... I'm double clicking, holding down the control- clicking in the corner-

Annnnnd.....I clicked on a fork now my cursor is a fork OTL

We need more informations.
If you playing on a Mac, then the problem is known and there ist no solution. Not Salem is the problem, its the java on Mac.
If you playing on a Windows, then maybe you should use a mouse on your Laptop, when your touchpad does not work proper.
If you playing on a Linux, same as Windows.

How do you playing?
