As for the help question. How far can you go into the darkness before this happens?

You cannot fast travel to holy lands.

You get the error when you try to make the survey?

So when you make the "New World Survey" it automatically marks the location you are standing as you craft the item? You do not have to go back and mark it in some way?

Yes, it marks the location you are currently standing at when you make it.
