Then you'll be inconvenienced and have to dig it out, or go around it.

hmm. This does not seem to be a big issue for me but im wondering if the mine is affected in any way that maybe removes ores or lowers the quality?

I don't think John added anything like that. I've never actually let my mine cave in.

What I say now may be bullcrap as my memory is not clear about it and I don't feel like checking, so maybe someone will confirm / deny.

After the cave in you should remove the rock tiles that were created by the cave in. Each of them increases the chance of another cave in appearing (even within the range of a mine support)

You can also look at it as a way to get spare material to shift through later. It is a good way to spam rubble if you have a few alt.s you want to do nothing on for awhile.
