You will, once you log in next, be unable to log out your character until he or she has a new homestead.
To clarify, you can force log out, but you will be left in the game world until you build a lean-to and designate it as a homestead. It's up to you.

to be even more clear: you can't log out. Your character will stay logged in even if you close your client.
