You make your new alt a friend of your main (make kin by HS secret)
then you talk to a wilderness guide with your new alt and there is a place to type in the HS secret of your main and press Enter.
You will be ported to the HS of your main.
Remember to have a HS for your alt before porting back to civilization or you will need to walk all the way back ;)
(and you if your alt dont have an HS it may get all its stuff stolen by the devs)
Good luck,

I believe the original character needs to have a claim stone, it doesn't work for leantos, but I may be wrong.

You are correct. It must be an active claim stone as the homestead. If you have a lean-to set as the homestead on a claim, you can switch them while you get the alt settled, and then move it back.
