Why are fertile turkeys worth so much?

I tried searching the form but I can't figure it out, I assume them laying more eggs then usual is not the reason.
Are they related to golden gooses somehow? Can they lay a special egg or will one of their normal eggs just have a chance to randomly spawn a golden goose?

On the golden goose page of the Tribe's wiki it says it comes from a fertile turkey, so I feel like it's poop isn't the only thing valuable about it.

Yes but geese are too rare and mysterious for most people to bother with.

They're ridiculously rare. I must've killed thousands of wild turkeys by now (seriously, I make it a point to kill every flock I run into while hunting), and I've yet to see a fertile one.

yep same here.
We too kill thousands of turkeys at my village, and have for months. We got approximately one in all that time.
Either some unknown factor exists to whether you have chance at all, or the actual drop rate is as you say, absurdly rare.

It feels terribly grindy because you don't actually need the wild turkeys for anything.

I guess regular player doesn't "need" fertile turkeys, golden geese and gold either
