Wondering since they cancel out damage when to close to another is it still better to have many or only one per area of affect

Its better to have many, but when I would be you I would wait for the next two updates before you invest alot of effort in your defense system.

The general consensus seems to be that it's best to have groups of braziers. Eg 4 braziers packed tight together, then the next group of 4 just outside the first group's range.

Placing many but spaced a few tiles apart within each other's range isn't very good as the damage done is lessened. Placing single braziers just outside the range of the next one would be great, but unfortunately it's easier for raiders to destroy them than it should be because we can build our own (fuel-less) braziers or torchposts on your land to reduce the damage. Placing the braziers in tight-packed groups helps to counter that as the raider has to spend more materials and spend more time under brazier fire destroying a larger number of braziers.

This exactly.
Make sure the groups of braziers are out of eachothers range. (Their range can overlap, just the braziers can't be in range of eachother.)

That being said, if you're not a major target just do single braziers for now and you should be fine. Patches may change many things soon.
