Trouble getting water

I have read all about getting water in a bucket and actually did it once but since then have had no luck in getting any water out of a river. I have constructed three buckets and "left clicked" them to access them and then held them over the river and "right clicked" them to fill them. No luck. I have clicked them repeatedly over the water thinking I would only get so much water each time I clicked. Still no results. I tried clicking and "dragging" them thru the water. Nothing. What am I doing wrong. It's probably something stupid that I'm not doing or doing wrong. Please enlighten me. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Left click on bucket (don't hold it, just left click), then right click on water. And you are done.

That's what I've been doing but I just tried it again and...nothing.

Click on shallow water, your character needs to be able to reach it.

That did it. THANK YOU. I, apparently, can't get it from deep water even though I had "swimming" activated.
