you should check the wiki for all slotable items, compare and decide what to slot according to what you can make, or if you would like to wait and slot after you acquire something specific

If you're looking for civilian slotted clothes, you should sort by 'production' and go for the smallest ones for jute clothing since you'll be able to make better clothes pretty soon. You should just try to slot some easy small things to get a quick bit of help for now. Which ones you pick depend on what you're doing. I went with mostly Arrowheads and Simple Crucifix as I had a lot of base leveling and tree chopping to do.

If you want hunting clothes, you should still go for civilian artifacts because they all give CCD, which helps you against animals. You could also try a couple offensive artifacts that match your weapon of choice, but keep to the smallest ones for your first set.

Go charm hunting.
Earn lots of silver.
Buy cotton or ready clothes.
Slot items not top tier, but something like flagstraps, as there is no point in putting a WSS in a farmers jacket, when you can do it in a pirate coat or something like that.
And remember slotting is almost never ever 100% so be ready to face broken slots.

PS: Broken clothes are better than being naked! (for all the naked ppl out there  ) EDIT: Pay other people to slot for you if you have under 10k thread and needle and other skills simular.

There's already some good advice here though I'd like to add a few things.
For hunting I would prefer damage rather than defense.

Piercing is good if you hunt tough stuff that requires sword blows.
Impact is handy for smaller things (it affects the AOE moves.) but not much of a priority, as most of the small things won't really kill you if you need to hit them a few times anyway.
Blunt is probably the best for general hunting. It makes your club and uppercut hit harder. (If you didn't know, hitting stuff with a club gives them a reel debuff, which greatly increases the damage from uppercut making it as good as a sword for hunting.)

For civilian stuff I would recommend putting in an extra bit of efford and making a set for the common tasks. (Woodworking & cooking most notably, possibly digging or mining too depending on situation). You don't need to get the best things but depending on your advancement getting the 2nd or 3rd best artifacts (plus the one below that) is very doable. Digging is especially easy if you can spend some time hunting for traces of the lost colony & feathers. Woodworking isn't too bad either with the amber pin being fairly cheap.
Getting a good set for your civilian alt / player / character will help greatly.
