The only problem with using the server town for grassland / sand / water resources is the competition. Lots of people are also roaming around trying to find things and preventing the chunks from reloading and re-spawning.
For instance, I'm trying to hoard salt at the moment. Last night around 8 I walked the beaches of Jamestown from one end of the claim to the other and came home with 3 salt. This morning at 5:30 I did the same thing and came home with 14, plus 3 beaver brains.
Just be mindful of these things

Also, if you've just got a small pocket of one of the biomes, settle a good two mini-maps away from it rather than directly in it or on the border. This will help the area unload while you're working at your settlement so it's resources can respawn for you. I've seen a lot of settlements smack-dab in the middle of a tiny pocket of autumnal forest. This is just a waste.
