I'm with most people on this. Autumnal or Coniferous. There is no need to live on forest-bordering-on-grassland since you can port to the server city to get grass and stuff.

I also agree with the theory (I haven't tried this myself) that advanced players could take advantage of the more hostile and difficult to traverse areas. Badlands are horribly bright, but if the character has the ability to plant trees then why not. Paving and lots of trees could, in theory, make the place more "cosy".
One of my camps are situated on a cliff. It's rather convenient. 8-)

This thread has made me realize there is a forest biome missing on the wiki. You have the yellow/green, brown/green (coniferous), and red/orange. I've always avoided the yellow/green because the foraging just sucks there.

My understanding is that Autumnal Woods show up on the minimap as Orange(dull red leaves), Yellow (yellow leaves)and Green(bright red leaves). Are the differences between these areas in terms of foraging?

Coniferous Forest is Brown with Green spots.

Woodlands (or 'Mixed Forest' or 'Witch's Hat forest') is Green with Brown spots.

Witch hats allow you to Glottony some, and get all your work done with their high nutritional value, then there are the thorn bushes. Live in woodland that borders something else, then you can make Acorn Indians and Thorn Crowns etc.

Seems there's a couple of differences between the two. I just learned to avoid the yellow stuff as it was missing a few items the maple forest would spawn and I couldn't ever find anything extra. It's been a while since I've really explored either thoroughly, though, so with changes over the last few months, I could be completely wrong.

Otherwise, yeah, you have the right colors there for the ones I'm thinking of.

Once you build a town and get 'civilized' with infrastructure many of the foragables become useless. All the grassland biomes for example are un-needed, even autumn grass is passed over for mass cereal fields to accumulate hay.

There are nice outposts to have though in the badlands for granite boulders and snake hunting but in the end it comes down to trees and accessibility to them.

Agreed, but this is aimed at new players who haven't developed a large base with mass farming yet and will still rely on foraging and hunting for a good part of their food.

I always wind up having to forage for hay because I used all my field hay for pumpkin masks
