Judging by the posts above you get a cave down from mining a random tile. Probably a dark tile.

I bet it's just a small chance everytime you remove a block.

What I'm curious about is - can you find more than one entrance to another level? And if you do - will they point to the same "instanced" location?

*Sigh* and here I am twiddling my thumbs, trying to get even one :P

Well thats the problem! Nobody got an ore vein by thumb twiddling. Get out there are start mining :).

Well, that's only while my fires are burning through those black walls ;) No luck still, but I am hopeful!

By the way, since we cannot telepot to Providence from inside the mines anymore, has the spawn location of players when they enter the mine been fixed? I would often get stuck in objects when porting inside a mine, and would have to go to providence and back home to get unstuck.

For what it's worth, I got mine from a hard tile (needed to soften it with a fire first), and it did clear a lot of surrounding tiles (i'd say a circle with radius 5 off the top of my heads, cannot log in right now).
It's hitbox is smaller than the resource file implies. When it spawns you'll automatically drop down a level.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Something is definitely wrong with mining at this point. My claim had 2 nodes, an iron and a copper node, and I was going to build the copper mine sometime next month, since I wasn't in any hurry and copper wasn't really that useful to me.

Since I was having trouble with my original mine, where I had built 4 supports already and had expanded quite a bit, I thought I would build the other mine and just have two; one for building stuff and placing pots etc, and anything that wouldn't fit outside, and another one to just mine away and play around with the new mining system.

In my original mine, every wall I mine reveals a black wall behind it. Every wall, we're talking 100% chance here. The black wall requires a fire, so that's what I had been doing, but progress had been slow. In the new mine, I haven't seen a black wall once. It even collapsed and still no black walls to be seen anywhere.

One theory is that the chance to get a black wall increases the farther away you move from the ladder... Another is that my original mine is somehow bugged... However I have mined more than 30 walls in my new mine and still no veins!!!

Am I doing something wrong, or is my luck just that abysmally low?

Your first mine just happened to be in the 'middle' of a hard rock cluster. Depending on how far in the middle it could be 40-80 tiles of firing before you get yourself out. The good news is, most veterans will probably tell you this is the best spawning you can have for 'long term' as your cave down is now likely to be very close to your ladder.

Sounds like your 2nd mine was just in the middle of a very large rubble cluster.

Oh, I see. So if I mine straight North, for example, I should be able to escape it soon(ish). Thank you for your reply!

Thats correct. Going in a single direction when surrounded by hard rock will create an escape sooner than trying to strip mine your way out.

Can we get an answer to this please?
