I think that was two separate comments put into one without thinking. Rabbits are easier than crickets. OP is trying to get brains for leather - which is why he (I assume) is hunting big game.

On the subject of deer, I don't touch them yet even though I seem to have the humours to kill and survive. I stick to beavers for brains - and the random surprise attack of a march hare. Bears are an even bigger no-no for me.

Deer are a great source of hides and meat. There is deer everywhere. You dont need more than 20-25 in YB and blood to take them down.

if you can kill march hares, you can kill deer: they have twice the hitpoints with mostly similar stats except for that.

Deer do more damage but have 1/2 the life of a March Hare - though a March Hare will attack you twice as fast so the damage you receive overall will end up being similar.

yesterday I killed my first deers, all my stats at 30 and with a Spanish saber equipped
with most of them I had ~16 Blood left, one killed me in a big lag

but beware of all the meat you get from a deer, it's enough to feed a hungry pack of wolfs...

I tried for a bear - but I didn't have Big Game Hunting skill - so wasn't able to hurt it & got eaten. Rediculousness

Beware of its roar , it will give u a debuff that drains your BB which continue for a while even after the battle ends

I've got ~30 humors and I still have no trouble getting KO'd by deer. Obviously I suck at combat, but also I've fought almost different AI in deer. Out in the open, level terrain - i have the best chance, but if you forget guard up, you are done for.

The worst place to fight are the crowded 'dark' forest and/or hilly terrain. They weave around obstacles and then mass charge. Or they climb up/down the hill side and swing and miss - then yep, mass charge. Then sometimes they will sit there, take the first hit - then stand there while you recover for your second.

Personally, if you need brains, you need beaver. Isolate them and take them out one by one. They have a stupid AI but if you aren't quick they will start spinning around hitting you with multiple low power attacks. Stay away until it stops, and be warned that they will bring in any other beavers into the combat with the 'dance'

I have to say, wish Deer would jump fences/cliffs(high as char) - would make game quite interesting.
